Mary Mathew MFT, Psychotherapy Services for Individuals, Couples and Families Experiencing the Effects of Cancer

As a cancer survivor myself, I know firsthand how scary the “C” word is. As a result of cancer treatments, oftentimes people develop mild to severe forms of depression, anxiety, “scanxiety,” and post-traumatic stress disorder. Many people experience symptoms during treatment while others are symptomatic only after they are in full remission.

My practice treats fellow warriors and their families who are navigating the cancer process, survivors trying to figure out their “new normal”, individuals in remission for years but are still processing the events that once happened, and those currently experiencing metastasized cancers.

I use a multi-layered, eclectic approach to therapy. People are not a “one size fits all” and neither is the way I view treatment approaches. I like to integrate a solution-focused, existential, acceptance and commitment and CBT approach to therapy. I do this to help identify core beliefs, underlying fears and anxieties, while implementing realistic interventions in order to create attainable goals with my clients. I strive to create the safest space in therapy for clients to discuss whatever comes to their minds and sits heavy on their hearts.

In my counseling sessions for cancer patients, survivors, and caregivers, I use a few different therapeutic methods. We will explore the human experience, including the idea of death, our freedom, and our choices. I will show you mindfulness techniques to help keep you grounded in the present moment, which will help you self-soothe and regulate any fear or anxiety you may experience. And in the process, you can learn how to take responsibility for your own life and what the meaning of life is for you.

I have been working with the cancer community since 2015. As someone who was directly impacted by cancer, providing support for patients, survivors, and caregivers through counseling is my passion and lifelong commitment.

Psychotherapy services are for individuals, couples and families experiencing the effects of cancer or chronic illness. I offer a supportive environment where we explore the effects of cancer in all areas of life. I also support caregivers who are navigating the cancer process alongside their loved one.

If you are experiencing cancer-related depression, anxiety and post-traumatic stress, you are not alone. Together, we can help you to recover motivation, perspective, and gain a sense of empowerment that will enable you to live your “new normal.”
