I am celebrating my 11th year as an ovarian cancer survivor despite two recurrences.
I was named a winner for the 2013 National Indie Excellence Awards for women’s health and a finalist in the 2012 Midwest Book Awards for my book, Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir. When I was diagnosed with Stage II ovarian cancer, I realized how little I knew about what was once called “the silent killer.” In this memoir, I am a calming presence and positive companion, offering a refreshing perspective of hope with the knowledge that the beauty of the soul, the real me and the real you, outshines the effects of cancer, chemotherapy, and radiation. This is a story of survival and reminds readers that disease is not an absolute, but a challenge to recover.
I am a retired Registered Nurse with a Master’s Degree in Human Development/Psychology, an author of three books including my award-winning book Outshine: An Ovarian Cancer Memoir, a blogger, an author of several articles, a public speaker, a fundraiser for ovarian cancer research, and an advocate for survivors.
For twenty years, I had my own holistic nursing service called “Kare ’N Touch” which offered counseling, biofeedback, stress management, therapeutic massage, and healing modalities at a minimal charge or whatever the client could afford.
I write and advocate about health/wellness, and various social issues.
I am a member of Rave Reviews Book Club, Rave Writers International Society of Authors, and Independent Authors Network. My blog provides a platform for all authors and avid readers, cancer survivors, and those interested in outshining life’s challenges.
I am on the Patient Leadership Council for Tesaro Pharmaceutical Co. I have organized three support groups in Lake County, Florida. I am an active member of Women for Hospice. I am involved with a number of ovarian cancer Facebook groups.
I am committed to improving the education of physicians and nurses in the field of gynecologic cancers, especially ovarian which is difficult to diagnose. Their education in this field is very limited or non-existent. Therefore, too many women are sent from one specialist to another rather than having necessary lab work (CA125) and a vaginal ultrasound. Karen calls this the “Gilda Radner Syndrome.”
