Geri Ruane LMT, CLT-LANA, Certified Oncology Massage Practitioner, Certified Lymphedema Therapist

I have been trained and licensed by the Society of Oncology Therapists. I have advanced education in oncology massage therapy along with lymphedema/lymphatics, pediatric oncology, geriatric, hospice/palliative, hospital and end-of-life care. I have been practicing since 2010.

How does an oncology massage therapy session benefit people who currently or who have formerly dealt with cancer? The oncology massage session is a comfort-oriented massage that is customized and adapted with a variety of specialized techniques that meet the needs of the individual who is living with cancer. Special modifications are made for each person and for each session.

It is gentle work that supports, nourishes and strengthens the organs and the immune system in order to safely address the symptoms and side effects associated with cancer and its treatments, such as pain and anxiety. My goal is to give you a safe and effective massage, trying to improve your quality of life as you go through your cancer journey.

An oncology massage session can look different for each person. Even if two women are diagnosed with breast cancer, their massage sessions can require different adaptations. One woman might need some scar tissue/range of motion, flexibility work while the other woman might have some lymphedema in her arm as a result of lymph node removal and radiation.

Oncology massage is the modification
of existing massage therapy techniques

in order to safely work with complications
of cancer and cancer treatment.

Anyone who has ever received cancer treatment,
from those in active treatment to those in recovery or survivorship,
as well as those at the end of life,
are best served by a massage therapist
who has received training in oncology massage.

I am available to give hospital massage sessions to in-patients at local Austin area hospitals, as well as offering out-call sessions to individuals who need to be at home/nursing home/assisted living center, etc.

My education and training:
300-hour oncology massage certification program from the Peregrine Institute of Oncology Massage Training
Oncology massage / hospital and hospice massage education and training from Tracy Walton, Gayle MacDonald, Healwell Integrative Health Therapies, Mt. Sinai School of Medicine and MD Anderson Cancer Enter Integrative Medicine programs
Lymphedema and manual lymph drainage certification (Vodder method) from Klose Training and Consultants
Breast Cancer Rehab education and training (Axillary Web Syndrome, Scapular Winging, Scar Tissue Release) from Klose Training
I have advanced training in hospice, eldercare, pediatric and pediatric oncology massage therapy

I am dedicated to providing safe, effective, comfort-oriented massage sessions for my clients. Oncology massage may reduce nausea, pain, fatigue and stress as well as improve one’s energy, sense of well-being and sleep. Since 2010, I have had extensive training in working with people in all stages of cancer and with those who have medically complex health issues.

I am one of the founders of Oncology Massage Alliance, a nonprofit organization that offers complimentary hand and foot massage sessions by oncology trained massage therapists to people undergoing chemotherapy and radiation treatments in Austin-area clinics. http://www.oncologymassagealliance.org
