When she was diagnosed with oral cancer in 1991, Terri Tate had a successful hypnotherapy practice and had seen the power of the method first hand. So naturally hypnotherapy was one of the healing modalities she chose in dealing with the disfiguring disease from which she had a 2% chance of survival.
Alive and well, Terri delights in offering others the help that hypnotherapy provides in so many areas such as finding our own path to wellness, reducing stress, changing habits, improving sleep, and growing more at peace with ourselves.
When we write, we become more fully ourselves.
Terri Tate is the author of A Crooked Smile – a hilarious and heartwarming story about how she wrote her way back from disfiguring oral cancer and a 2% chance of survival. Terri’s favorite job these days is teaching writing. Keep reading…
Terri also has a background in psychiatric nursing and psychotherapy and has worked with people facing a wide variety of challenges for over four decades. She hopes that lessons learned along her healing journey will shed light on the path for others. During the darkest nights of her ordeal, Terri unearthed a method for tapping into her own intuitive guidance. She chronicles this discovery in her memoir, A Crooked Smile, with a foreword by Anne Lamott.
She believes that we all have access to deep wisdom and loves to support others as they find their own answers to life’s most perplexing questions. She offers help to cancer patients and others attempting to navigate the vast array of healing options available today, as well as the complex health care system. Terri teaches Trusting Your Inner Guidance workshops around the country with Jan Adrian, Founder and Director of Healing Journeys.
Terri is available for individual sessions in the San Francisco Bay Area and via phone, Skype, and FaceTime for folks in other locations. Contact Terri to set up a free phone consultation.

One of the big blessings of my life are the ongoing memoir groups that moved out of my living room and onto zoom in 2020. This is some of the most wonderful work I’ve ever been blessed with and I’m constantly astounded by the creativity, generosity and genius of humans. At least the ones in these groups. And our ability to connect on zoom continues to amaze me. I’ve seen people grow in incredible ways as they become more fully who they are by sharing their stories. It’s such an honor to witness. Also, there are a lot of laughs!
We have a few openings in classes that start in September and October. If you think it’s high time to write your life for yourself or posterity; or if you want to put together a memoir; or if you just want to get your stories down before you forget them—these groups are for you!
I’ll be traveling some in September, so if my response time is slower don’t take it personally. I’m happy to discuss the groups by phone if you want to—just let me know.
Many blessings & much love,
Terri
I have participated in writing workshops with Terri Tate since early 2020. Her personalized mentoring features thoughtful analyses of participants’ ongoing writing, encouragement, and humor. Terri also exposes her groups to useful points of view and advice from other professional writers. Simply put, she has made me a more thoughtful and hopefully better writer. I strongly recommend her.

Terri says,
Humor saved my life and infiltrates my speeches, shows, and coaching sessions.
Since outliving disfiguring oral cancer from which I had a 2% chance of survival, I’ve discovered the power of storytelling.
My solo show, “Shopping as a Spiritual Path,” tells the story of my journey back from that disease in hysterical detail.
I love to help others tell effective stories and bring more humor into their work and their lives.

You may not remember me but we lived together on Washtenaw during the summer of our junior year at Michigan. We lived with Sue Garbett and Susie Dykhouse. Don’t remember how I came across your name but since I did bought and read A Crooked Smile and absolutely loved it and have also watched a couple of your videos. You are truly amazing. You haven’t lost an ounce of your sense of humor I am happy to say. (I remember your definition of ectopic pregnancy) I am fascinated with your life but even more with your tenacity and love for life. I would love to reconnect with you but will understand if the thought of one more old friend is more than you can bear. Just know that you have made an amazing impression on me by sharing your life story. I was so interested to know that you had Anne Lamott write the forward to your book. I met her once many years ago since she was a friend of a friend of mine from Marin. Thanks again for the plethora of wisdom and humor, Nancy Kazlusky van Wesep
