Alissa Hirshfeld MFT, Hospice Bereavement Director and Grief Counselor, Spiritual Healing, Author, EMDR, Mindfulness and Meditation, Creative Arts

I am a licensed marriage and family therapist in Santa Rosa. I have 12 years experience working as a hospice bereavement director and grief counselor, and 24 years total working with clients with chronic illness as well as loss and trauma. I am also a certified spiritual director.

I have an extensive background in grief work, having directed a hospice bereavement program, published in this field, taught at the university level, and created and directed bereavement camps.

I have written two books, one a memoir and one a novel: This Whole Wide World is Just a Narrow Bridge, and Living Waters: From Harvard Halls to Sacred Falls. Both address aspects of coping with a cancer diagnosis, grief and loss for individuals and families. They are available on Amazon.

I have also taught on the graduate level classes on Aging and Long Term Care.

I regularly work with cancer patients and their family members, inspiring health, personal growth and healing. I use EMDR, as well as mindfulness meditation and expressive arts, to help clients through the trauma of chronic illness and treatments. I also utilize EMDR to help in processing trauma of all kinds.

My training is in depth psychotherapy but, for some situations, a solution-oriented cognitive behavioral or mindfulness approach is more effective. I also draw on those techniques.
