Proverb: “Pū‘ali kalo i ka we ‘ole.”
Translation: Taro, for lack of water, grows misshapen.
Meaning: For lack of care, one may become ill.
This Hawaiian proverb reflects my personal philosophy regarding human health and well-being. I have treated an array of clients from many different ethnic backgrounds, all walks of life, and all age groups. I am a National Register Health Service Provider, a level II Usui Reiki practitioner, and I speak English, Urdu, and Hindi fluently.
Most of my clinical work experience as a psychologist has been in integrated primary care and rehabilitation settings working alongside physicians, chiropractors, acupuncturists, occupational therapists, and massage therapists.
My short-term therapy approach entails utilizing evidence-based practices often used in primary care settings including Behavioral Activation, Mindfulness Based Cognitive Behavior Therapy, Emotional Freedom Technique, and Problem-Solving Therapy-Primary Care. My long-term therapy approach is integrative, leaning more towards existential/humanistic psychotherapy. I also enjoy incorporating distance Reiki, nature therapy. and meditation training into sessions.
My areas of interest are chronic health issues, women’s health, fertility, stress management, grief counseling, postpartum depression, treating people in the “helping professions” who may be experiencing compassion fatigue and burnout, and guiding clients through quarter and mid-life crises. I also teach my clients about food choices that enhance mental functioning.
I am licensed in Hawaii and Texas. I accept Aetna, Optum, UHC Student Resources, United Healthcare, and HMSA Hawaii. I am contracted with Telemynd for military families (Telemynd accepts most military insurances). If you are insured but I don’t accept your insurance, we can work out cash payment options and I can provide a receipt for you to send to your insurance company for reimbursement via Reimbursify. I offer sliding scale fees for cancer patients who have no insurance at all.
On a personal note, my father transmuted into a higher frequency of energy (aka “passed on”) after a two year encounter (others like to call it a “battle”) with stage 4 colorectal cancer. I am convinced a cancer diagnosis is a journey unlike any other in this so-called life. It is amazing to me how a cancer diagnosis brings out so many different emotions … not only in the person diagnosed, but in family members and friends as well. Everyone has his or her own unique way to cope. It is interesting to observe the different ways people cope, what ways are more helpful than others, and the dynamics that play out between friends and family members after a loved one’s diagnosis. I feel I am now very well-equipped to help people who have been hit with a cancer diagnosis in the family. I am also proactive about psycho-educating my clients about the importance of early screenings, especially if cancer runs in their family.
I work especially well with South Asian families, given I am a second generation South Asian American. I definitely understand the cultural issues that often arise between first generation immigrant parents, their second generation children, and the differences they face in mentalities about many issues, including personal health care and wellness.
My practice is now 100% virtual and I only accept virtual clients at this time.
