Dr. Kiel has been working with individuals who have been impacted by cancer since 2008. She is a clinical psychologist and has experience working both with diagnosed individuals as well as caregivers.
There are several significant points of time during the cancer experience in terms of emotional impact.
Time of diagnosis is, of course, important because there is generally a great deal of shock and adjustment that goes along with having cancer, let alone navigating all of the appointments, procedures, and reactions of others.
Treatment itself requires an entirely different set of coping skills, no matter the type of cancer or treatment. The time during post-treatment, however, can be just as challenging, if not more so.
As “survival mode” begins to wane, the impact of having cancer starts to sink in. There is sometimes a sense of having been traumatized and always a sense of having been changed in some way.
Dr. Kiel utilizes several different interventions in therapy, including Cognitive-Behavioral Therapy, Mindfulness, and Eye Movement and Desensitization and Reprocessing (EMDR).
She is an active member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society (APOS).
