Dr. Laurel Mellin is the Founder of Emotional Brain Training (EBT). She is a New York Times Bestselling Author and Associate Professor of Family and Community Medicine and Pediatrics, University of California, San Francisco. She has a PhD in health psychology.
Laurel spearheads the EBT mission to empower people to rewire their own emotional brain to solve problems with mood, relationships, habits, productivity, and health and to achieve optimal well-being.
EBT is a new paradigm in healthcare, the new CPR for the modern age. Stress is the #1 cause of most problems, and research has shown that our traditional methods (CBT, mindfulness, insight-therapy) can be helpful, but they do not always address the level of high-intensity and chronic stress that is part of living with cancer. EBT provides a foundation for these forms of self-care and healthcare to improve their effectiveness.
With the emotional techniques of EBT, people can stop over-reactions in four minutes or less, whereas cognitive methods often take 30 minutes or more to relieve stress. The tools to shut off these responses on the spot are universal. The method is practical. Learn the tools in 30 days, one skill per day for 30 days, to solve your four top issues in life. (You choose the issues and then learn how to rewire them). Continue with advanced EBT to raise the brain set-point for lasting results and to experience the seven rewards of purpose: Sanctuary, Authenticity, Vibrancy, Integrity, Intimacy, Spirituality, and Freedom.
When diagnosed with cancer, life becomes more stressful, and the old ways of managing stress are simply not enough. The brain has built-in mechanisms for turning high-stressed states into nurturing states, but few people know how to use these natural brain pathways. I offer options for cancer patients.
Laura is offering to facilitate a group for four weeks for the Nancy’s List community. This is thrilling since she usually does not facilitate groups for cancer survivors and primarily works with providers.
The group meets by telephone. The voice is very powerful for emotional work, and the phone offers privacy and confidentiality. There is a format for each of the four meetings. Think of it as a bridge, so participants can learn to think about their cancer from a brain-based perspective and learn the tools to control their brain state/stress. After four weeks, participants can continue with their group with our self-study program or just use the tools they have learned. Or they can drop out.
