Cancer and the long-term effects are part of my life. I am a survivor of Hodgkin’s Lymphoma and Breast Cancer. In order to cope with the emotional hurdles and physical limitations that my new life had become, I began studying meditation under the Lama Norhla Rinpoche at the Tibetan Buddhist Monastery, Kagyu Thubten Choling, in 2003. Formally becoming a Buddhist in 2004, I was given the name Chogyi Lamo. I have received teachings by the Dalai Lama, Karmapa and other meditation masters.
As my meditation practice grew, I entered the Dharma Path Program. This program teaches the progressive stages of meditation for serious practitioners, which results in significant personal development of meditation and a deep understanding of Tibetan Buddhism. Due to my ability to communicate concepts of meditation, I was asked to manage the bookstore and greet newcomers. Soon, I was also helping organize major events at the Monastery.
The goal of Meditation is not to control your thoughts. It is to stop letting them control you. Meditation is about using the mind to develop an awareness and achieving peace. Get the mental and physical benefits of working with a professional Meditation Instructor. Learn to improve your focus, attention, and ability to work under stress.
Friends and family members began to ask about Buddhism and how to meditate. I began teaching individuals and small groups.
I hold a Masters degree in Education.
My mission is to bring awareness to the issues facing Cancer Survivors. There are 15.5 million cancer survivors,. There needs to be a voice to bring awareness to the medical issues we face, to lobby for funding through Medicare and Insurance companies to cover our care, and for the medical community to develop a Cancer Rehabilitation branch of medicine.
While the media has begun to feature blogs and articles about having cancer, there is a lack of awareness of the continuum of cancer. We do not always triumph to become stronger. Sometimes we need to adjust to a new normal that includes limitations.
My mission is to work with others to bring support, knowledge, and awareness to our large community of Cancer Survivors.
I can use Facetime or Skype for one-to-one sessions.
