My interest in counseling people affected by cancer stems from my personal experiences as a caregiver and my decades of work with community groups such as Candlelighters Childhood Cancer Foundation, Any Baby Can, St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital and the Leukemia & Lymphoma Society.
At the University of Texas, I was awarded a Grace Fellowship that allowed me to receive additional training on topics related to illness and disability. My clinical training took place at LIVESTRONG where I provided counseling to cancer patients, survivors and their caregivers.
As a member of the American Psychosocial Oncology Society, I stay abreast of new and emerging evidence-based research related to cancer patients, caregivers and survivors. I recently received additional training through a National Cancer Institute grant at Memorial Sloan Kettering Hospital. Additionally, I work with bereaved clients in both group and individual therapy settings. I have facilitated a grief group at the Austin Center for Grief and Loss for the past 3 years.
Before I became a therapist I was a lawyer and, from that experience, I bring a focus on the practical and achievable. My clients notice that I build on their strengths and am forward-looking. The therapies I use tend to be cognitive-behavioral, solution-focused, mindful and supportive.
I am a long-time Austinite, have been married for over 25 years, and have two grown children.
I hold license number 61180 as a Licensed Clinical Social Worker with the Texas State Board of Social Work Examiners, 1100 W. 49th Street, Austin, Texas 78756.
