Founded in 2003, SIO is the premier multi-disciplinary professional organization for integrative oncology. A 501(c)(3) not-for-profit organization, SIO enables communication, education, and research to occur by bringing together practitioners from multiple disciplines focused on the care of cancer patients and survivors.
Mission: The mission of the Society for Integrative Oncology is to advance evidence-based, comprehensive, integrative healthcare to improve the lives of people affected by cancer.
SIO has consistently encouraged rigorous scientific evaluation of both pre-clinical and clinical science, while advocating for the transformation of oncology care to integrate evidence-based complementary approaches. The vision of SIO is to have research inform the true integration of complementary modalities into oncology care, so that evidence-based complementary care is accessible and part of standard cancer care for all patients across the cancer continuum. As an interdisciplinary and interprofessional society, SIO is uniquely poised to lead the “bench to bedside” efforts in integrative cancer care.
Who Is SIO?
Members share the common goals of excellent comprehensive patient care, enhancement of anti-cancer therapy, supportive care and prevention of cancer. SIO members are part of a unique multidisciplinary community of oncologists, nurses, psychologists, social workers, nutritionists, complementary therapy practitioners, naturopathic doctors, herbalists, acupuncturists, massage therapists, and many other health care practitioners. Members are in academic and health care institutions, small businesses and corporations, and also include individual practitioners. Learn more about the benefits of SIO membership and JOIN TODAY!
Conference Updates
We’re excited to announce that registration is now open for the 20th International SIO Conference in Banff, Alberta, September 14-16, 2023. Visit the conference website to register at Early Bird rates, book your hotel room at the Banff Centre for Arts & Creativity, and learn more about visiting Banff. Don’t forget to purchase a ticket to the SIO 20th Anniversary Celebration at the Banff Gondola on Friday, September 15, 2023, from 6-9PM MT, and join us for a gondola ride, gala dinner, dancing, and gorgeous Rocky Mountain views from the summit of Sulphur Mountain. Tickets are limited for this special event, so register soon!
I also encourage you to make travel plans early, including renewing any travel documents or applying for visas. In fact, the US Department of State is experiencing high demand for passport processing. As with all international travel, the earlier arrangements are made, the better, and we don’t want you to miss out on what promises to be a memorable anniversary conference. We’ve added quite a bit of new content to the conference website since last month, so check it out here.
SIO is also accepting applications to the Dr. Barrie Cassileth New Investigator Forum, a three-hour intensive mentoring session for early-career integrative oncology scientists hosted this year by Eugene Ahn, MD, SIO VP ofCommunications and 2023 Co-Chair of the Scientific Review Committee, and Ting Bao, MD, MS, our Immediate Past-President. Acceptance to this forum also includes complimentary conference registration and reimbursement up to $1,500 for travel and accommodation expenses. Last year at the 2022 Scottsdale, AZ, conference, we named the Inaugural Dr. Barrie Cassileth New Investigator Scholars in honor of our late founding president, Dr. Barrie Cassileth. Read a tribute to her life and work as a pioneer in evidence-based integrative oncology here.
We are also accepting applications for SIO 2023 Conference Travel Scholarships until May 31st. This year, we have included more helpful information on this webpage such as how the scholarships work, how much it may cost to attend, and how scholarship awardees can claim their scholarship funds. Be sure to scroll down and read the entire page before applying for a conference travel scholarship. We want to make sure conference attendance is accessible to everyone, so be sure to get your application in by the deadline.
If this is your first time attending an SIO conference, we have a new mentor and mentee program this year created by my students, Haley D. M. Mather, BSc, and Julie Deleemans, Ph.D. As a new attendee, you will have the opportunity to be matched with another SIO member who has attended SIO conferences and can be a resource for reviewing each day’s proceedings, discussing topics ofinterest, and answering any questions you may have. This program will help foster a sense of community and provide valuable networking among conference attendees. And if you’ve attended SIO conferences in the past, please consider becoming a mentor to help new attendees get the most from their first conference. Sign up on the registration page to participate, either as a mentor or mentee.
