Being diagnosed with cancer is disruptive to every aspect of a person’s life. It is often isolating, associated with high levels of fear regarding side-effects of treatment and the question about how long one has to live. Cancer does not have to be disabling or disempowering. With the right approach, the cancer journey can be one that instills hope grounded in evidence and the opportunity for better outcomes.
The use of integrative therapies and non-conventional treatments alongside standard-of-care cancer treatment is happening in as much as 91% of cancer patients. There are clear guidelines for Naturopathic Physicians who are board certified in oncology (FABNO) to best deliver patient-centered care in the areas of assessment, treatment planning, care management, inter-professional collaboration and survivorship care (1). There is a need for integrative care in oncology that includes the patient’s needs, the standard-of-care treatment, and the ability to maintain quality of life and improve outcomes.
