Camp Sunrise is a week-long overnight camp for pediatric oncology patients and survivors. The camp is maintained and sponsored by The Sidney Kimmel Comprehensive Cancer Center. Campers are given the opportunity to establish strong peer relationships with the other children who are going through the same experiences and feelings. Campers also gain independence from the regimen of cancer treatment and enhance their self-confidence by trying new activities. We strive to provide children a normal camping experience among their peers who have also experienced cancer treatment.
At Johns Hopkins, we believe kids should be kids — especially kids with cancer. Camp Sunrise helps to make that a reality.
Since its inception in 1986, Camp Sunrise has combined an exciting camp experience with professional medical support, which creates limitless opportunities for pediatric oncology patients to be normal kids again for a week. Amidst the campfires, crafts, and sports and games, campers are given the chance to establish strong peer relationships with others who have experienced cancer, gain independence from cancer treatment, and enhance self-confidence by trying new activities with camp friends, both new and old.
Camp Sunrise is held in early August in Annapolis. The 187-acre campground has hiking trails throughout and boasts of its diverse ecosystems including wetlands, creeks, old growth trees, and forests. At the hub are rustic wood cabins, a health facility, dining hall and full kitchen, fully accessible pool, covered pavilions, basketball court, and large playing fields. Our unique environment allows patients and survivors to lean on each other, to share their thoughts and fears, and to come together with people who simply get it.
