Walking with families through childhood cancer,
Navigating the challenges together,
Discovering love in the journey.
Founded in 1984, HIS KIDS Cancer Support has been serving kids with cancer and their families for over 30 years! We aim to help them through the devastation of this diagnosis while showing that even through cancer, there can be joy!
We operate mainly in the St. Louis area with an additional branch in the Southwest Florida region.
Treatment Camp: For children ages 8-14 who are undergoing cancer treatment or in remission. Children find a place outside the hospital where they can feel like a “normal” kid again, where being bald is not unusual and other campers can relate to what they are going through.
Sibling Camp: For children ages 8-14 who are siblings of childhood cancer patients or have lost a sibling to cancer. Siblings find a place where they are just as special as their brother or sister on treatment, and they find friends that understand their complicated feelings. They get a week to have fun and be free of the typical stress in the home of a seriously ill child!
LIT Camp: For teens (ages 15-17) with cancer or in remission and teen siblings of children with cancer. In LIT (Leaders in Training) camp, teens find a place to learn what it means to be a counselor for children on treatment and their siblings and a leader in their school or community. They also get a week to participate in fun activities, share their own feelings and make friends that last a lifetime!
Camp HIS KIDS provides a unique experience by giving these special children an opportunity to meet others that are going through the same circumstances outside of the hospital environment. Each activity at camp is therapeutically designed to meet the emotional and social needs of our campers as well as the physical ones. These activities are planned by our highly trained Camp Directors including an art therapist, counselor, recreation specialist, and an early childhood education specialist. We have a staff of around 50 volunteers (ages 18+) at Camp HIS KIDS. Many of these volunteers started coming to camp as campers or LITs, but that is not a requirement. Our volunteers participate in training weekend before the campers arrive at Camp HIS KIDS so they are prepared and well-trained to care for our campers and LITs.
