BlueFern Massage Therapy has been serving people in cancer treatment and beyond since 2009.
Our mission is to provide restorative bodywork to encourage ease of movement and balance for the whole self. Our shared movement and dance backgrounds help us to understand how the body moves in space, enriching our knowledge of body mechanics. We offer a range of therapeutic massage services including relaxation, soft tissue injury, deep tissue and sports massage, oncology massage, and prenatal/postpartum massage.
We have several therapists that are specially trained in oncology massage therapy as this aspect of our population that we serve is growing. We are trained to recognize any contraindications of massage therapy in order to provide a safe and comforting session for all of our clients. Each session is tailored to the individual needs of each client, whether this is adapting to effects of cancer or cancer treatment, working with mobility issues from surgery, working around any lymphatic issues or risks, and always providing a nurturing environment.
This type of massage is appropriate for anyone with cancer or a history of cancer, even if decades ago. We are trained to ask the right questions and take appropriate measures to ensure your safety, no matter where you are in the cancer journey.
Oncology massage is not a different set of massage techniques. Depending on the individual, the massage may include some variations or adjustments, or it may not look much different than a massage someone may have received before a cancer diagnosis. There can be lingering effects of cancer or cancer treatment and we take care in all scenarios to be able to provide a safe and therapeutic massage.
Massage during treatment for cancer can be extremely beneficial in helping to deal with the side effects of cancer and/or cancer treatments. If you are in treatment for cancer or just out of treatment and are interested in receiving massage or have questions, please call or email us to inquire.
Erika is a graduate of the Muscular Therapy Institute (formerly) in Cambridge, MA. She is a nationally certified massage therapist and licensed in the state of Massachusetts. She has been practicing massage therapy since 2005. She also holds a Bachelor’s from Emerson College but began as a dancer at the University of Michigan. Her experience as a dancer and general active lifestyle has helped her understand how muscle groups work together, either in harmony or dysfunction. Each session may integrate a variety of techniques such as neuromuscular therapy, myofascial release, and soft tissue injury work. She always seeks to create a safe, relaxing, and balanced treatment targeted to the needs of each client.
In the fall of 2019, Erika’s work at BlueFern shifted to working exclusively in oncology massage, working with people with cancer, cancer histories, people going through treatment or in the midst of diagnosis and beyond. She also works with caregivers as she has a deep understanding of the impact on those supporting and caring for those going through illness and treatment. She has been doing this work for over a decade which has allowed her to use her clinical skills as a bodyworker while tapping into the heart and joy in working with this population.
In addition to working at BlueFern, she also works as a massage therapist at Dana-Farber Cancer Institute in Boston and teaches Tracy Walton’s 4-day oncology massage workshop around the country.
Erika has additional coursework in pre- and peri-natal massage, certified through Carole Osborne’s program. She is a Usui Reiki practitioner, trained in orthopedic massage with the Ben Benjamin Institute and oncology massage with Tracy Walton.
We welcome any inquiries to find out if our practice is a good fit for yourself or a loved one.
