I am an integrative oncologist, with a true passion for what I do!
If we are honest with ourselves, we realize that cancer is an epidemic. People diagnosed with cancer, living with cancer, and dying from cancer continue to rise. Although research has taught us a great deal about cancer, the way we view and treat cancer is currently incomplete. We need a paradigm shift!
The treatments included in the cancer standard of care today, such as surgery, chemotherapy, radiation therapy, immunotherapy, and endocrine therapy, are certainly valuable. After all, they have significant research supporting their use. Discarding them because they are not ideal is a big mistake.
However, an equally big mistake is failing to acknowledge the many valuable treatments which exist outside of the standard of care. We have robust science supporting the use of many other therapies, and if we are going to treat cancer optimally, we should embrace these evidence-based treatments as well.
Integrative cancer treatment entails the strategic use of a wide spectrum of cancer therapies, including conventional treatments, alternative treatments, and everything in between. I often talk about being an “open-minded skeptic,” meaning that I am very open to any potential treatment, but I balance that with a healthy level of skepticism.
Using science, tradition, and history as our guides, I believe we have an outstanding and revolutionary way to treat cancer. In addition to chemotherapy, our treatment programs also include therapies such as local hyperthermia, lymphatic drainage therapy, sono-photodynamic therapy, pulsed electromagnetic field therapy, mind-body therapy, nutrition, repurposed medications, and nutritional supplements, to name a few. This innovative approach to cancer care is inherently patient-focused, so each treatment protocol is customized for each patient and his or her unique needs.
One component of our treatment program of which I am extremely proud is our added focus on the patient’s spouse/caregivers. We realize that a cancer patient’s loved ones carry a significant burden themselves, so we make our mind-body therapy sessions available to them as well.
I have received formal training at Clemson University, Georgetown University, Medical University of South Carolina, and Yale University School of Medicine, as well as a wide variety of trainings and certifications in various complementary and alternative modalities. Each of these valuable experiences not only taught me a great deal about various subjects including medicine, science, and the humanities, but also about myself.
One experience that profoundly impacted me was a research internship at Harvard Medical School. My research there was on the doctor-patient relationship, and how critical the bond between physician and patient is. I apply this knowledge each day as I care for cancer patients in my innovative medical practice. My goal is to care for patients who have cancer, rather than merely treating the cancer that patients have.
I also hold memberships in several professional organizations, including the American Society of Clinical Oncology (ASCO) and the Society for Integrative Oncology (SIO).
My integrative approach to treating cancer has allowed me to successfully treat many patients who have come to me in their darkest time of need. I am humbled by the many patients who travel long distances, including from outside the country, to receive care in my practice in Atlanta, Georgia. This is truly a calling, and I love it.
In addition to my clinical work, I am also a bestselling author of the book, Cancer Secrets, as well as the host of the award-winning podcast, the Cancer Secrets Podcast. Both my book and my podcast have allowed me to reach a wider audience, spreading the word about the power of integrative oncology.
