I am a Physician Assistant with 20 years experience working with people touched by cancer. My journey into integrative medicine recently culminated in graduation from the Andrew Weil Center for Integrative Medicine Fellowship in the Fall of 2021. My journey started as a personal one and then expanded, the more I learned, into a professional one.
It started when I prepared a homemade meal. The ingredients caused my husband to have an acute reaction that we immediately determined was caused by the MSG in one of the sauces. I started to read labels and improve our diet through cleaner ingredients. This led to setting up a garden and gaining more knowledge into ways to improve our health.
Amidst making personal dietary changes, I stumbled across an environmental medicine course that was offered through The University of Arizona Center for Integrative Medicine. That one course led me to take several others they offered. Ultimately, I enrolled into the Fellowship at the University of Arizona.
Other than my personal interest in integrative medicine, I have long noted that my patients were pursuing integrative approaches that I knew little to nothing about. These ranged from using various supplements to the use of nutrition services and acupuncture. Since completing the fellowship, I have been able to have more in-depth conversations with my patients regarding their supplements and other treatments. I have also been able to personally speak to them further about nutrition, sleep hygiene, meditation/mindfulness, and energy therapy. Currently, I am furthering my education in integrative oncology through the Integrative Oncology Scholars Program at the University of Michigan. My Graduation is in May 2022.
The realization struck me that, while I was able to educate my patients on health and wellness in a more profound way, I simply provide limited amount of education during a standard follow-up office visit. The patient would come back 3 or 6 months later still complaining of the same issues. It was after the fellowship, that I decided to engage my entrepreneurial spirit and start my own health coaching business to further support people with their health and wellness goals. Using my skills of motivational interviewing learned during fellowship, I engage each person’s innate power of healing themselves with a focus on lifestyle medicine principles. These core pillars of health include healthy eating, physical activity, stress management, better sleep, and a healthy environment.
