Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area was founded in 1990 as The Wellness Community San Francisco East Bay. Our founder, Shannon McGowan, had previously served as the Program Director for the first Wellness Community based in West Los Angeles, which began the integrative therapies and cancer patient empowerment movement in the United States.Today, we are still the only organization of its kind in Northern California. We are an affiliate of the international Cancer Support Community organization, but we are an independent nonprofit corporation. All of the funds we raise are used to underwrite direct programs and services in our local community.
Cancer Support Community San Francisco Bay Area provides comprehensive integrative care — including counseling, support groups, nutrition, exercise and patient education programs — for people with cancer and their families or caregivers.
We offer support groups, educational programs and mind/body programs in Spanish, led by a bilingual, bicultural facilitator. These programs provide a place for families to come together to learn more about coping with cancer and managing treatment and recovery together as effectively as possible. The support groups are held in San Pablo and Walnut Creek.
