7 Easy Ways to Get Grounded & Feel Better
How do you know if you are grounded or not? When considering your energy, the act of being grounded means your root chakra is balanced and healthy. This is often accompanied by a feeling of strong earth connectivity. You will feel stable, and confident. You know you’re protected and safe. Your entire body is at ease. You are productive, make better decisions, and feel balanced.
Ask Yourself:
- Am I questioning things more than usual?
- Am I having difficulty with communication or expressing myself?
- Am I distracted, distant, lack motivation, procrastinate, can’t finish projects or lack focus?
If you’re not feeling grounded, try one of these 7 suggestions:
Aromatherapy
Aromatherapy has been used for thousands of years around the world. The action of deep breathing to clear your mind accompanied by the calming smells of natural oils triggers a response from your emotions, steadies your heart rate, lowers blood pressure, and increases memory.
- Vetiver
- Frankincense
- Clary Sage
- Eucalyptus
- Cedarwood
- Sandalwood
- Myrrh
Get Organized
When we’re feeling overwhelmed or overworked, we have a tendency to move faster instead of slower. The more helpful response is to slow down and get organized. Take stock of what is truly important in your life and clean out the rest. This may mean saying no to activities, plans, or additional work. Mental, emotional, and physical clutter or disorganization play a part in our emotional well-being. How about …
- Making a list and prioritize by importance and time needed to accomplish a task. Include self-care time.
- Tidy up your desk or work space.
- Put away, give away, or throw away what has been cluttering your space.
Mental Visualization
Take a step back and picture where you’re going in life, in your year, or even in your day. Visualize where you want to be, how you want to feel, and the people who surround you. Your mind only knows what it is told and if you continue to feed it with positive, self-serving imagery, emotions, and gratitude, you will quickly find yourself exactly where you want to be.
A quick exercise is to go back to a place that made you happy or relaxed. A beach vacation perhaps. What did you smell, see, hear, feel, as you were on the beach for example? And for the future, as you are enjoying something wonderful, like being out on a nature walk or holding a newborn, what are you hearing, feeling, seeing, smelling? Take inventory to recall that moment later.
Physical Grounding to Earth
Take a walk on the earth, barefoot perhaps. Connect to the physical ground with your bare feet when possible. Try yoga, go for a run, or nap in the shade of a mighty oak. As long as you are touching the earth, you will feel a sense of peace and ease. Seriously, have you hugged a tree lately? Try it!
Science tells us that Earth’s natural electric charge stabilizes the physiology at the deepest levels, reduces inflammation, pain, and stress, improves blood flow, energy, and sleep, and generates greater well-being.
Listen to Music
One of the most powerful healers for our mental state is music. We connect on a physical level with movement and dance. We connect on an emotional level with songs for motivation, energy, excitement, and even anger. Music helps us sleep more soundly and breathe more deeply.
Human Touch
Ahhhh the healing hug! The power of human touch is often incredibly healing. Hugs instantly boost oxytocin levels, which heal feelings of loneliness, isolation, and anger. Holding a hug for an extended time lifts serotonin levels, elevating mood. Hugs strengthen the immune system. The gentle pressure on the sternum and the emotional charge this creates activates the solar plexus chakra.
Meditation
And we cannot talk about grounding without giving meditation its fair dues. This is an increasingly common practice that goes hand in hand with the power of visualization, setting intentions, and focusing on your breath, all with the goal of grounding yourself to your roots.
Practicing resilience tools, connecting to your community, and moments of self-care are key to being grounded and taking these positive actions before entering into more acute states of emotional and mental stress keep you balanced, focused, and in harmony.
