Lymphedema Treatment
During cancer treatment a person’s lymphatic system can be compromised, which can lead to lymphedema. Factors that impact a patient’s risk of acquiring lymphedema include the extent of surgery and lymph node dissection and radiation therapy. The lymphatic system has a role in both immune function and circulation. The lymphatic vessels are the transportation system that moves fluid, proteins, cellular waste, and bacteria out of the tissues. The lymphatic system also contains white blood cells that aid in immune function. When a person undergoes cancer treatment, the lymphatic system can be negatively impacted. When the lymphatic system cannot perform its job effectively, fluid can accumulate in the tissues leading to swelling. This abnormal accumulation of fluid and swelling in the tissues is called lymphedema.
The warning signs of lymphedema may include the following symptoms in the areas of and around where you were treated for cancer:
A heavy or achy feeling
A tightness or decreased flexibility in the joints and surrounding tissues
Noticeable swelling
Pain, numbness or tingling
How Treatment Can Help
To date, there is no cure for lymphedema, however, the amount of swelling can be reduced and the tissue quality improved in order to increase comfort, mobility and quality of life as well as prevent progression of the disease. The gold standard for lymphedema treatment is called Complete Decongestive Therapy (CDT). CDT is a safe, reliable and non-invasive treatment that is performed by a certified lymphedema therapist.
Utilizing rehab before cancer treatment may reduce surgical complications, decreased length of hospital stay, readmissions, and overall health costs with lymphedema prevention, patient education and skin care.
Utilizing Cancer Rehab during/after treatment can reduce pain, improve circulation, mobility, and healing, and decrease swelling. These benefits decrease emotional distress and improving the patient’s quality of life and outcome.
Our practitioners have oncology and lymphedema specialty training, offering safe and effective evidence-based care, providing best practices for restoring function and quality of life to patients undergoing cancer treatment, which may include surgery, chemo and/or radiation.

Acupuncture & Intgrative Medicine
The majority of comprehensive cancer centers incorporate acupuncture into their oncology care. Oncology acupuncture uses research-based point protocols and treatment frequency/duration as the foundation for developing a plan of care. The base protocols are modified based on the individual patient’s diagnosis and unique needs, making each treatment highly personalized. Therefore, it is imperative that your practitioner has advanced oncology acupuncture training.
Evidence shows acupuncture as an adjunct to standard oncology therapies can be effective in treating conditions such as:
– Nausea and Vomiting
– Pain
– Stress, anxiety and depression
– Neuropathy
– Hot Flashes
– Fatigue
– Constipation and Diarrhea
– Delayed Wound Healing
– Immune Support

A registered dietitian is a part of the team of health professionals that help with cancer treatment and recovery. Balancing your diet can be challenging at the best of times, but when going through cancer treatment and recovery, it is even more important.
Finding the right balance of protein and calories can help you feel better, reduce symptoms from cancer and cancer treatment, and support a strong healthy body throughout your cancer journey. A dietitian may work with both individuals and their families to manage and help navigate dietary needs that arise during and after cancer treatment. These changes could include the types and amount of foods consumed, how often a person eats, and how the food is prepared and eaten.

One-On-One and Group Counseling Available
“You have cancer.” Those are the three little words people don’t want to hear. They are terrifying. The Mental Health Foundation (2018) describes the run of emotions: “What if it spreads? What happens next? What will I tell the kids? What will going through treatment do to me? How will we manage if I have to give up work? Is my relationship with my husband strong enough to survive this? Am I going to die?” Each cancer journey is unique, but most have levels of anxiety, depression, vulnerability, resilience, fear, and frustration.
The diagnosis of cancer is a family experience that changes the lives of all its members, bringing with it immense stress and challenging situations. The daily routine, distribution of duties, and familial roles all change. It affects the couple’s relationship, their sex life, work obligations, household duties, and parenting. Immediately following a cancer diagnosis is the fear of the unknown. Initial disbelief, denial, and despair are common and can last from days to weeks. Dysphoric mood, anxiety, appetite changes, insomnia, or irritability often follow and can last weeks or even months. As these waves of emotions flood cancer patients, the focus of the family system shifts, and roles and responsibilities often change. The first few weeks are typically a blur of scans, biopsies, clinical opinions, treatment options, and logistical decisions. The patient is stressed…and family members are terrified and feel helpless. Often much attention is given to the patient, but it is often the spouse, children, parents, siblings, and friends who are lying awake at night with worry. Family counseling focuses on both the patient and the family system. When processed in a healthy way, patients and families typically adapt to and recuperate from treatment and return to a new baseline, sometimes referred to as a “new normal.” Counselors can help navigate the rocky path and engage in role playing with patients and their spouses in how to communicate with each other and their children during this difficult time.
