Anina Van Alstine, Dance and Movement Based Expressive Arts

I was looking for myself.
Movement brought me home.
Anina Van Alstine

“The body never lies. ”
Martha Graham

“How you move is who you are.”
Anna Halprin

My movement studies began at Sarah Lawrence College where I studied Eastern Movement Skills with Katya Delacova. I studied at the Tamalpa Institute with Anna and Daria Halprin, learning movement-based performance art and guiding skills to enhance and provide resources for healing. I also have trained privately with Jamie McHugh, Alice Rutkowski, Taira Restar, Ken Otter and Adriane Marchione. I am interested in the application of dance as a healing art as taught by Anna Halprin and also in working with people in the business world, facilitating communication through the movement arts. I love working with movement as metaphor and find it enriches communication in every venue where it is used. I am always amazed at the ways in which the body, given a voice, can inform us of resources we may have ignored and create opportunities for personal and social transformation. The skills I learned at Tamalpa Institute have informed my work as a Real Estate Broker. Working with movement images helps people to clarify their goals at a practical level by bringing in the imagination and taking them “outside the box” to express their wishes!
I travelled with and assisted Anna Halprin in venues within the United States and France. I previously taught group and private movement classes in various venues in Santa Cruz including for the Dominican Cancer Support Group, and have taught classes for Realtors in using expressive arts as a guiding skill for clients. I am a Guild Certified Feldenkrais practitioner.

Letting Go and Moving Forward A Gathering
to Celebrate our Re-Emergence

Inside my light-filled and airy new studio, we will use movement, sound, drawing, and poetic writing to re-imagine ourselves as we transition out of the confinement from the past 3 years of extraordinary change. Take advantage of the energy of Spring and dance!

During this two-hour gathering we will …

* come together to identify our common themes

* engage in a guided personal exploration to re-connect with ourselves, maintaining awareness of  our identity as individual bodies situated in a constellation of others

* share a movement experience to re-capture our sense of playfulness and joy

* enjoy time and space for personal and group reflection about our vision for the future.

Three years ago, we were told as a society to “Shelter in Place”. Within a period of hours, all our ideas of “normal” were thrown to the winds. For the purposes of safety and even survival, touching other humans, breathing air shared with others, or even contact with surfaces, were removed from the realm of possible safe behaviors. Travel became impossible!

We have all experienced various degrees of loss during the pandemic … from the loss of loved ones who died (sometimes alone because of COVID safety rules) to the chance of normal daily contact at schools, stores, or in the street. Beloved institutions have closed their doors. Much of what was once familiar has changed. The impact of these losses is deeply felt; one is unsure how to reclaim “normal”. How do we move forward now?

Please come join me in a two-hour journey to find a creative response and resolution to the issues brought up by the pandemic and our mutual feelings of isolation.

No prior dance experience is necessary! Come dressed in clothing which is comfortable for movement and bring a water bottle. Please bring an object which symbolizes your experience of the pandemic. Keep the size small (under 6″).

There will be chairs and pillows for those not comfortable standing!
