Free from the Cage:
Surrender as the Path to Awakening
Freedom doesn’t come from holding, but letting go.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear friends,
There is a story from the great Persian poet Rumi about a caged parrot, gifted with a beautiful voice but held captive by her circumstances. When her merchant owner journeyed to India, she asked him to tell the wild parrots of her longing — of her caged separation and sorrow, her desire to return to freedom.
Upon hearing her message, one of the Indian parrots trembled and fell dead. The merchant returned and recounted this and, in hearing it, the caged parrot understood, and she herself collapsed to the floor of her cage. Believing she had died, the merchant opened the cage door and gently laid her outside. But then she rose — alive and free — and flew to the trees.
This parrot lives in each of us. We, too, are caught in cages of fear, habit, and the illusion of control. We long for freedom, but often don’t realize that what must be released is not the world, but our attachment to the cage of fear and habit itself — our resistance, our clinging, our attempts to hold on.
The more we sit and pay attention, the more we realize how little we actually control — the movements of the mind, the waves of joy and sorrow, the changing tides of the body. We begin to sense that freedom doesn’t come from holding on, but from letting go. What is asked of us is not more effort or striving, but a deep kind of loving trust — it’s like learning to float in water. At first, we panic. But eventually, we discover we are held.
Freedom doesn’t come from holding, but letting go.
– Jack Kornfield
To open in this way is not weakness. It is called the path of the spiritual warrior — one whose heart, when fully exposed, feels everything. In the words of one teacher,
When you search for your awakened heart,
you don’t find something solid —
you find tenderness.
And that tenderness becomes your power, your compassion, your ability to stand in the center of this life and bear witness to its unspeakable beauty and sorrow.
So this is our invitation: to be like the parrot, to fall still and let go of what binds us. And in doing so, we may discover that the door has been open all along — and that we, too, were made to fly.
Real spiritual practice is not about acquiring some special state or perfection. It is about surrendering with love to life as it is.
Metta,
Jack
Reach Out and Touch the Hearts Around You

For me,
protesting for what matters is a meditation
— opening a sky of compassion and care
to the colorful mystery,
the procession of cars,
beings,
clouds,
and life.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear friends,
This is a heartbreaking time. The news from Gaza and Darfur, from the Rohingya and Haiti, is heartbreaking. And still, you can do something. Reach out and touch the hearts around you. Send money. Write petitions and send them to politicians. Support the brave friends doing the work to feed the hungry on the ground. Add your voice to love.
I have been standing at the freeway exit with a sign, reminding people of the ongoing sorrows and inviting the possibility of justice and love. For me, it is a meditation — opening a sky of compassion and care to the colorful mystery and procession of cars, beings, clouds, and life.
After a thousand cars, some people honk and give a thumbs-up, some pass by silently, a few shout in anger. All good. Find your way to offer your voice, to offer your heart, to reach out and mend or inspire or simply connect with love. It all helps.
Here is a story by Kurt Kauter that can inspire us all:
Tell me the weight of a snowflake, a coal-mouse asked a wild dove.
Nothing more than nothing, came the answer.
In that case, I must tell you a marvelous story, the coal-mouse said.
I sat on the branch of a fir, close to its trunk, when it began to snow — not heavily, not in a raging blizzard — no, just like in a dream, without a sound and without any violence. Since I did not have anything better to do, I counted the snowflakes settling on the twigs and needles of my branch. Their number was exactly 3,741,952. When the 3,741,953rd dropped onto the branch — nothing more than nothing, as you say — the branch broke off.
Having said that, the coal-mouse flew away.
The dove, an authority on this since the time of Noah, thought about the story for awhile, and finally said to herself, Perhaps there is only one person’s voice lacking for peace to come to the world.
May we all add our unique beauty and powerful voices to help tip the scales of this world to compassion.
Love,
Jack

Just in being ourselves,
in resting in our true nature,
the world becomes changed.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear friends,
In this heartfelt reflection – Living From the Fullness of Our Being – I invite you to remember who you truly are — not as some distant ideal, but any moment when you tune into the simple, authentic, caring presence already here within you.
Through stories, teachings, and poetry, we explore what it means to shift from fear and striving into fearless compassion and the wisdom of the heart. You’ll hear the tale of the mouse who became an elephant, only to realize that transformation does not come from changing form—but from seeing with new eyes of love.
As we rest in the truth of our being, we touch a deep nobility, a dignity that belongs to every life. From this place, we discover a quiet power to meet the world with love. As I share in the talk: Just being ourselves—resting in our true nature—that is what changes the world.
This teaching includes:
- The parable of the mouse, the elephant, and the magician
- Reflections on fearlessness and nobility
- A Rumi poem on embodied spirit
- Learning to live in simplicity, patience, and compassion
- Spiritual presence as the greatest form of activism
Be a lamp unto yourself, the Buddha said.
Let this video be a reminder that your very being can be a source of light.

The breath is alive
because we are alive.
The art of being aware
of the breath
is really the art of reconnecting
with the body,
with the movement of life.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear friends,
I welcome you to pause from the momentum of your busy week to take a moment to check back in with your breath, body, and heart.
In this guided meditation, The Breath of Life, I invite you to come home to the breath–not as something to control or perfect, but as a sacred reminder of the miracle of your aliveness.
We sit quietly together, like a king or queen on their throne, rooted to the earth, open to the sky, with a sense of dignity and grace. The art of being aware of the breath is the art of reconnecting with your body–this movement of life.
With eyes gently closed, we return to the simplicity and beauty of the present moment. The breath rises and falls, moving like a soft wind through the body, reminding us of the mystery and miracle of being alive.

If you cannot find the truth
right where you are,
where else do you expect to find it?
– Zen Master Dogen
Dear friends,
What if the greatest treasure wasn’t something to be sought, but uncovered here and now, through the beauty of practice?
In this heartfelt reflection, The Treasure of Presence, I want to invite you into the quiet, steady richness that lives within each of us — the presence of mindful loving awareness. Over and over, I have found that presence itself is the real treasure. It is not something we have to strive for or chase. It is a wellspring of love, of freedom, of simplicity that’s already here, already alive in your own heart.
When the world feels overwhelming, when the mind is racing or the heart feels tired from efforting, we can return to this sacred space that can hold it all. This talk is meant as a balm — for the weary, for the striving, for the parts of us that have forgotten how near the treasure truly is.
The treasure is not in the future. It is not in some faraway mountaintop or spiritual ideal. The treasure is here and now, waiting quietly and tenderly for us to remember.

Neither meditation nor activism
has to be a grim duty.
These are invitations to open the heart
and be present for everything.
In activism,
you stand up
because you care and you love,
and then you bring your best to it.
– Jack Kornfield

To awaken Soul Force
is to see that the sorrows of the world
and the sorrows within us
are not separate.
As we heal ourselves,
we learn to stand up
and heal the world.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear Ones,
In the changing tides of the world, I invite you to find refuge in the wisdom of this video, reminding us of the strength of our human spirit, that no matter how dire the circumstances may be, we always have the opportunity to choose love and transform our pain into a compassionate power that can heal the world.
There is a strength in the human spirit that does not come from force or control, but from the courage to face our own sorrow and the suffering of the world with an open heart. When we meet life with love instead of fear, we awaken a power greater than the sword — a soul force that can heal and transform.
In the end, what matters is not how we have conquered, but how we have loved.

Meditation and spiritual practice
is not meant to be a grim duty.
It is meant to be
a rediscovery
of the love and secret beauty
that is within you.
Jack Kornfield
As times become turbulent,
it’s up to each one of us
to tip the scales to compassion.
You become a makeweight of hope.
–Jack Kornfield
I invite you to honor the light of your own heart within. Remember that well-being is not something to chase — it is here, awaiting your caring presence. Through presence, loving awareness, and gentle practice, you can nurture the field of well-being in yourself and positively affect the world around you. Tending to your inner light, you bring more wisdom, compassion, and joy into your life and the lives of all you touch.
It is from this recognition of your own natural beauty and nobility that you can best serve the world and mend the places that are calling for your nurturing support. May this teaching help you reconnect to the strong, loving heart within you, so you can share it abundantly with the world.
In this catalytic moment, I want to offer you a reminder: the inner garden of the heart shapes the outer landscape of our lives and of our world. In this video clip filmed at Spirit Rock, Tending Our World, I share helpful stories, luminous insight, and a dash of humor, inviting you to explore how presence, compassion, and joy can become radical acts of service.
Even in times of turmoil, we are not powerless.
When we rest in loving awareness — when we make space for joy alongside sorrow — we begin to shift the collective field. We remember that we do not walk this path alone. The love we cultivate within becomes the gift we offer to others.
The wisdom in this video is both a balm and a call — to tend what is needed, to plant seeds of loving kindness and peace, and to remember that the most meaningful change is always rooted in the human heart. Always remember, no matter the circumstance, you can quiet your mind, open your heart, and tend this world with beauty, dignity, and loving awareness.
Human beings periodically go through wars and depressions, and we will no doubt go through global crises again. We may actually be in the middle of one now. But that does not mean we should abandon our hope.
To be hopeful in bad times, writes Howard Zinn, is not just foolishly romantic. It is based on the fact that human history is a history not only of cruelty but also of compassion, sacrifice, courage, and kindness.
What we choose to emphasize in this complex history will determine our lives. If we see only the worst, it destroys our capacity to do something good. But if we remember the times and places — and there are so many — where people have behaved magnificently, this gives us the energy to act, and the possibility of sending the spinning top of the world in a fine direction.

Dear Friend,
I want to share something that touched me deeply during my time as a monk in rural villages of Southeast Asia years ago.
In the dry season, when food was scarce, villagers would still place rice and whatever little they had into the monks’ alms bowl each morning, mine included. I received in silence, humbled and a bit uncomfortable — how could I accept this from people with so little when I could easily wire home for money?
But then I witnessed their joy in giving.
They weren’t just offering food to me personally. They were supporting what I represented — the path of awakening, compassion, and loving-kindness that had brought light to their culture for thousands of years.
Of the little we have, their actions said, we want to make sure to support this because it brings joy and light into our whole life.
Their generosity made me want to be a better monk than I might have been otherwise.
This is the heart of Buddha Nature
As the Buddhist text begins: O nobly born, remember who you really are.
Buddha Nature isn’t about perfecting yourself or adding something new. It is about stepping out of what Robert Johnson calls “the body of fear” and reclaiming your place in our vast universal heart.
The ten qualities we’ll explore together aren’t distant ideals — they are already within you. Join us in …
-
Sensing your own Generosity and how it makes your heart sing and life come alive
-
Honoring the Virtue that creates authentic integrity in your relationships
-
Simplicity and Renunciation that brings freedom through letting go
-
Balance and Equanimity offering a peaceful heart amid turmoil
-
Wisdom seeing beyond appearances into the great mystery
-
Wise, Effort and how to direct your life force with mindful intention
-
Patience and Trust in life’s natural unfolding
-
Truthfulness aligning your seeing and speaking with what is genuine
-
Determination and courage to embody what matters
-
Love that, as Mother Teresa taught us, sees beyond our too-small family circles
Why This Matters Now
We live in times that try to “colonize our hearts” with fear. But as I have witnessed with those like Nelson Mandela and Aung San Suu Kyi after years of imprisonment — no one can take over your heart. No one can take your spirit from you.
This becomes our invitation.
Twenty years ago, I made an inner vow: if I had a thought to give something, I would do it. Not from duty or judgment, but because I discovered the beauty and joy in generosity — and why it fits into the mandala of an awakened life.
Through stories, meditations, and practical teachings, our journey together will help you rediscover these qualities within yourself, transforming how you move through the world.
Join Me on This Journey
Together, we will move from the fears of the thinking mind into the loving awareness of the heart.
As Sasha Dichter discovered when he challenged himself to say “yes” to every request for an entire month — this path isn’t really about donating money or time. It’s about “testing what it feels like to live with a totally different orientation.”
Are you ready to discover what that feels like?
In our Buddha Nature course beginning June 2nd, we will explore how integrity and virtue are not about rigid morality imposed from outside, but about discovering “the universal laws of human happiness.”
As I have observed in my teachings, beneath all the timeless stories told about ethics and morality, personal virtue is “the adornment of humanity.” Even modern psychology confirms this — studies at Yale University highlight that pre-verbal infants become upset when they witness unfairness. There is something in us that innately knows what it means to have fundamental care and integrity.
In the course, we’ll explore three levels of integrity and virtue:
-
Limiting harm – The basic foundation of our morality as humans
-
Expressing compassion – Seeing that “we’re all in the same boat”
-
Reverence for life – Understanding our interconnection with all beings
Join me to explore how these timeless principles can anchor us in what we know to be most important, even amidst the challenges of our modern world.

It doesn’t take a lot for us
to add our goodness
— to serve, to care, to support, to awaken.
You can be the makeweight
that tips the scale to compassion.
– Jack Kornfield
Dear friends and fellow compassionate beings,
Here is a free new course to steady the heart and strengthen compassion.
Our world is in a time of enormous change, which Joanna Macy calls “The Great Turning.” In these uncertain times of unrest, of division, of deep collective anxiety, many of us are wondering how to stay grounded, how to stay kind, how to stay hopeful and helpful. Stand Up for Compassion – my new free online course and resource can help you find a steady heart in a world that can feel unsteady.
This offering is a spiritual rudder to help navigate turbulent waters. Together, we explore practices and teachings to meet fear with loving kindness, to transform anxiety into imagination and hope, and to remember that even in darkness, we can become a beacon of light for others.
Remember the story Zen master Thich Nhat Hanh told of the crowded refugee boats.
If even one person on the boat
stayed calm,
it was enough.
It showed the way
for everyone to survive.
In this free online course, we will learn to become the calm one on the boat who can show the way for all. We will reflect on our deepest values, learn how to stand up for what matters, and discover the power of community and the possibility of a wiser, more caring society.
This course contains heartfelt stories, wise teachings, grounding meditations — and above all, hope and encouragement — like the imaginal cells inside the butterfly chrysalis which remind us of the beautiful transformation that is possible when we meet the process of change with an imaginative mind and an open heart.
So if the state of the world has you concerned, fearful, or despairing — for yourself, the environment, or those vulnerable around you — join this new free online course, Stand Up For Compassion, and let’s walk together this path of courage, love, and clarity.

Things fall apart,
but in you is the understanding
that compassion is big enough
to hold all of this,
that the heart is big enough
to hold all this,
that the Dharma is big enough
to shine through empires, changes, crisis,
and beauty.
– Jack Kornfield

Dear Ones,
In these current times, it is so important to take time to recharge and recalibrate — to unwind the body, relax the mind, and open the heart. That is why I invite you, in warmth and wisdom, to relax into this embodying guided meditation I shared some years ago at Spirit Rock, Unwinding the Body, exploring how to soften into presence no matter the outside circumstance.
To tend and mend the world, we have to start from our own base of well-being and strength. Learning to meet our bodies, minds, and hearts with a gentle loving awareness — instead of resistance and struggle — we begin to meet ourselves, this world, and others with a natural kindness and beauty.
Allow these wise words and soft music to help the body unwind and open in its own natural way — no fixing, no forcing — just meeting each moment with a compassionate presence, letting your life return to its own natural rhythm of ease and balance. Then, with a deep, quiet, strong presence, you can act and serve all those around you with wisdom and care.
Something within us knows that we are connected to the vastness of the world. There grows with wisdom a sense of trust that we’re part of something bigger, as a famous Ojibwe saying goes, “Sometimes I go about pitying myself when all the while I’m being carried by great winds across the sky.”
What you most deeply long for is who you are, is coming back to your own heart, to your own beauty, your own wellbeing that you were born with, to that secret beauty. To meditate, more than anything, is an invitation to remember, to quiet ourselves, to touch back into this truth, this reality beyond the busyness, fears, and confusion. We all have these because we’re human, but what we are is so much deeper.
Through practice, we begin owning with gratitude the fact that we are here alive in this beautiful mysterious human incarnation.
