Who We Are
Founded in 2019 by Peter and Karen Ferrandino, Denise’s Unicorns is a non-profit organization dedicated to making a difference in the lives of children with cancer and their families.
In 1982, Karen’s sister Denise lost her battle with Leukemia. Diagnosed at the age of 12, Denise suffered through the disease for five years.
Karen recalls the struggle her family went through trying to provide the support to her sister during this time and vowed to fight to help children and families in need.
Our Mission
Denise’s Unicorns is dedicated to providing and supporting programs which enrich the lives of children with cancer and their families.
Enhance Well Being
We will strive to ensure children have an opportunity to achieve sustained physical, mental and social well-being.
Experience Childhood
We will serve, sponsor and support community-based initiatives that allow children and their families to experience and participate in exciting and uplifting activities, trips and events.
All children deserve to dream big. We will seek to give that wish to children and families to renew their hope, raise their spirits, and provide time away from the harshness of a cancer diagnosis and its treatment.
Provide Support
We will dedicate ourselves to providing the crucial support families need – financially, socially, and emotionally. We will help families understand they are not alone in this fight. We are community.
Our Vision
To inspire and support children and families of children with cancer. Grant opportunities that allow children to experience all the wonders of childhood.
Over the past several years, Denise’s Unicorn has made a series of donations to MSK. This resulted in a new room being built, where children suffering from pediatric cancer can seek comfort and solace, interacting with other children, instilling a sense of normalcy, and truly feeling like a kid again.
We have been donating to MSK for the past four years.
In the first year, the room was constructed.
In the second year, the room was filled with games, toys, video games, musical instruments, and arts and crafts. Children are also allowed to host parties in this room whenever they need.
In the third year, we provided the room with mentors; this consisted of art and music professionals who came in and helped the children advance their skills.
Within the past year, we restocked the room with new supplies and helped to ease the financial burden of parents in order to ensure that they could always be with their children.
This room is helping to improve the quality of life for these children and fill their lives with a sense of happiness and joy.
