A CANCER DIAGNOSIS CAN CAUSE WAVES IN EVERY DIRECTION.
We work to bring families coping with cancer back to calm waters, so they can focus on navigating cancer, not the mental challenges of diagnosis. We are dedicated to providing those diagnosed with cancer, their families, and loved ones access to mental health therapy and family support.
The need for mental health therapy in the wake of cancer has never been greater. Nearly 148,000 Texans are expected to be diagnosed with cancer in 2024, up 6.5% from 139,000 new cases diagnosed in 2023. In the first few months of 2024 alone, Flatwater saw an unprecedented increase of new program participants, up 44% from 2023.
OUR MISSION
We connect individuals with therapists to help clear their mind, heal their body, and find the strength to take on a diagnosis.
WHY FLATWATER
We believe in the healing power of water and recognize that a cancer diagnosis creates many waves and ripples in one’s life. We support those impacted by cancer in finding their “flatwater”.
MENTAL HEALTH TREATMENT CAN IMPROVE SURVIVAL RATES
People who get treatment often see improvement in their overall medical condition, and they are more likely to follow through with medical care and have a better quality of life.
Psychotherapy Solution was designed to help cancer survivors and their loved ones find the strength to meet the challenges of a cancer diagnosis through psychotherapy.
Our primary focus is on connecting individuals residing in Central Texas with therapists to help find the strength to take on a cancer diagnosis for themselves or their loved ones. We collaborate with therapists in our established provider network to provide access to this critically important support.
Those seeking support communicate with us directly to be connected with a Flatwater care provider. We also partner with top cancer institutions and organizations in Central Texas to identify those in need of support. This network includes, but is not limited to, Navigators at:
Texas Oncology
Breast Cancer Resource Center of Texas (BCRC)
Wonders and Worries
Our organization has created a network of licensed psychotherapists (LCSW, LPC, LMFT, PhD, and others) who specialize in trauma and cancer-related issues and meet the Flatwater standards. The money raised by Flatwater allows our network of therapists to provide care to people through ongoing support.
Flatwater care providers are not volunteers. We provide paid care for those in need as one way to ensure proper attention is given to each and every program participant.
If you are a licensed psychotherapist interested in learning more about our provider network, please view our Provider page.
Equine Assisted Counseling (EAC), also called Equine Assisted Psychotherapy (EAP), is a form of counseling that incorporates horses within a therapeutic environment supporting emotional growth and healing.
In an effort to touch more lives and further expand the type of mental health therapy that Flatwater provides, we offer Equine Assisted Counseling sessions. These sessions are intended to act as an alternative to traditional “talk” therapy. EAC is considered an experiential type of therapy where insights are discovered in real time while interacting with a horse. Experiential therapies have been shown to be more effective than talk therapy at times.
Licensed therapists and equine professionals work together with clients and horses to address and collaborate on treatment goals. Clients learn about themselves naturally through horse-related activities and interactions, and then discuss any thoughts, feelings, body sensations, or behavior and relational patterns that arise.
EAC ADDRESSES THE FOLLOWING AREAS:
-
Healing from trauma
-
Grief & loss
-
The role of trust in forming new relationships or repairing conflicts in relationships
-
Self-awareness and self-reflection
-
Personal growth and life skill development
-
Leadership and effective communication skills
-
How to objectively reflect on patterns of behavior and understand how these behaviors impact other areas of your life
WHY HORSES?
Horses only have the ability to live in the present. They do not have the ability to worry about the future or the past. They are non-judgmental beings who like to connect with humans who are authentic, congruent, and regulated. Horses have the ability to teach us how to have healthy relationships with ourselves and others that are safe, attuned, and connected. The relationship principles that are used when connecting to a horse are the same as when connecting to a human. In many cases, clients feel safer connecting with a horse prior to connecting with a human after experiencing trauma when relearning how to have healthy relationships.
Flatwater has provided over 68,000 mental health therapy sessions for those that would otherwise have no means to pay for care.
Flatwater has placed over 3,000 individuals and families into care and currently has over 400 active participants receiving mental health support.
