Tiana Pallister, Founder of Pallister Genetics

Pallister Genetics is an online genetic counseling consulting company that offers virtual (telehealth) genetic counseling services for individuals who wish to know how their genetics may impact their health and if there is genetic testing available that may be beneficial for them.

Our genetic counseling services are primarily focused on risk assessments for hereditary cancer predispositions, genetic screening for individuals planning to start a family or who are already pregnant, and individuals with a known family history of a genetic condition.

Tiana Pallister MS, LCGC is a licensed and board-certified genetic counselor and the Founder of Pallister Genetics. Prior to Pallister Genetics, Tiana worked in public hospital settings and gained extensive clinical experience in genetics, including cancer, prenatal, cardiovascular, neurology, and general genetics.

Tiana graduated from the University of Montana in 2014 with a Bachelor’s degree in Biology, emphasis in genetics. She went on to graduate from the University of Arkansas for Medical Sciences in 2018 with a Master’s of Science degree in Genetic Counseling. She has been a member of the National Society of Genetic Counselors (NSGC) since 2016 and is a participant of NSGC cancer and neurogenetics special interest groups. She also serves as co-chair for the Montana Association of Genetic Counselors.

Tiana knew one thing before choosing the path to becoming a genetic counselor. She wanted to help people. She had always been fascinated by the science of genetics, but she was also drawn to the psychosocial constructs that surround genetic conditions and genetic testing. She foresaw the power genetics knowledge had to improve lives, and deeply felt this was her avenue to perhaps making a small difference in the world.

Tiana is dedicated to empowering individuals to make informed decisions about their health and well-being and providing meaningful medical genetics services. From the time she was a little girl, her life choices were largely derived from a deep-rooted family motto: “Be a Producer, and Not a Taker.” This philosophy continues to be the framework for Tiana’s personal life as well as Pallister Genetics.

Tiana grew up in the small town of Helena, Montana. She spent 8 years working and studying abroad in Missoula, Portland, Little Rock, Ireland, Australia, New Zealand, and Greece before settling down with her family and two sons in Kalispell, Montana.

What are Genetic Counselors?
Genetic counselors are healthcare professionals with specialized graduate training in the areas of medical genetics. They hold Master’s level degrees and are also uniquely equipped with counseling skills, providing them with the ability to translate complex genetic information in meaningful ways to patients as well as healthcare providers.

The National Society of Genetic Counselors describes genetic counseling as “the process of helping people understand and adapt to the medical, psychological and familial implications of genetic contributions to disease.” (NSGC 2006).

Services
Hereditary Cancer Risk and Prevention
If you have a personal or family history of cancer or other hereditary diseases, a genetic counselor can help you understand your risks and the potential benefits of DNA testing. If you’ve already undergone genetic testing, a genetic counselor can help interpret your results in the context of your personal and family health history.

Family Planning or Current Pregnancy
1 in 22 couples are at risk for passing serious and actionable conditions on to their children. The American College of Obstetrics and Gynecology (ACOG) recommends information about carrier screening should be provided to every pregnant woman or couples ready to start a family. We can help identify genetic variants and help you create a path forward.

Other Indications
Genetic counselors are highly trained in all areas of genetic medicine, including neurodegenerative conditions (such as Huntington’s or early onset Alzheimer’s disease), hereditary cardiovascular conditions (such as familial hypercholesterolemia, Long QT, or familial cardiomyopathies).

Known Genetic Conditions
If you have a known genetic condition or mutation in the family, we can help you understand your chances of having the same condition or mutation, facilitate appropriate genetic testing and discuss implications to you and your family regarding those results.

Our Process
We obtain an in-depth personal and family history at every consult, allowing us to provide each patient with a personalized risk estimate, appropriate genetic testing recommendations (if any), and discussion of the benefits and limitations to genetic testing. For patients who choose to have genetic testing, Pallister Genetics will provide simplified interpretations of the results and a personalized summary of future screening and medical management recommendations (which may include preventive or risk-reducing options) are provided. Pallister Genetics will provide you with a copy of your test results (should choose to have testing), as well as a copy of your clinical notes, empowering you to share your private genetic health information with your providers and/or family members on your own terms.

For Healthcare Providers
There are thousands of genetic tests available on the market which may be ordered by consumers for healthcare providers. With new genetic tests entering the market daily, it becomes increasingly difficult for both patients and providers to fully grasp the clinical utility of each of these tests, including what these tests may tell or may not tell. Researching and ordering the most accurate, appropriate, and affordable genetic testing options for a patient takes a substantial amount of time. It also takes time to submit insurance prior-authorizations, gather detailed personal and family histories, provide informed consent with discussion of risks, benefits, and limitations of genetic testing, as well as interpret results into actionable recommendations. Accurate interpretation of genetic test results often requires the expertise of a genetic counselor or genetically trained healthcare professional.

At Pallister Genetics, we value quality care and our company was founded by the innate desire to make medical genetic services and testing more accessible.

We are happy to support you and your patients with:

  • Personalized Risk Assessment
  • Appropriate Test Selection and Ordering
  • Insurance Prior Authorizations
  • Informed Consent for Testing
  • Genetics Education
  • Test Result Interpretation
